Core insights
Knowing the ‘type’ of bowel someone has (upper motor neurone, lower motor neurone or mixed) is important for making a bowel management plan.
Regular routines with intake (food, fibre, fluids, medications) and timing of the emptying will help prevent problems such as constipation and unplanned bowel movements.
Make one change at a time and allow a few days before making further changes. This will help work out what is working and what isn’t.
