Respiratory function
Overview
Respiratory dysfunction is a common and potentially life-threatening consequence of spinal cord injury, particularly in people with cervical or high thoracic lesions. Impairment of respiratory muscles, along with autonomic nervous system disruption compromises ventilation and airway clearance, while increasing the work of breathing. The risk of respiratory complications is especially heightened in the acute phase, but remains life-long. Adequate and timely acute management is very important, as is appropriate discharge planning and community monitoring. The ultimate goals are to optimise quality of life, as well as improve respiratory health outcomes. This includes reducing hospital readmission and addressing prevalent health issues such as sleep-disordered breathing.
