Elbow

Specific risks

The most common risks are:

  • in bed when propping on the elbow, particularly with prolonged periods of side lying and bed rest
  • armrest supports at an incorrect height, poorly maintained, or increased pressure from leaning on the armrest
  • These areas should be assessed by palpating for ‘boggy’, soft, or tender areas.

Management of breakdown

  • Provide elbow protection to prevent further deterioration and ongoing as needed.
  • Review bed mobility and consider the most appropriate mattress surface.
  • Maintain skin quality, avoiding the development of dry and calloused areas.
  • Review posture, seating and armrest set-up.
