Elbow
Specific risks
The skin over the elbow is particularly vulnerable when:
- Propping on the elbow in bed, particularly during prolonged periods of side lying and bed rest.
- Armrest supports on wheelchair or shower chair are incorrectly positioned (e.g. incorrect height), damaged or the person with SCI is loading increased pressure through the armrest (e.g. during functional leaning, or in cases of inadequate postural supports).
These areas should be assessed by palpating for ‘boggy’, soft, or tender areas.

Management of breakdown
- Provide elbow protection to prevent further deterioration and ongoing as needed.
- Review bed mobility, bed positioning and consider the most appropriate mattress surface and positioning devices.
- Maintain skin quality, avoiding the development of dry and calloused areas.
- Review posture, seating and armrest set-up.
