Managing periods of bed rest

Prolonged bed rest can be physically and psychologically challenging, and adherence may be difficult without appropriate support. A comprehensive care approach can help maintain bed rest and promote healing.

Support strategies may include:

  • Nutritional support: Provide access to balanced meals and adequate fluids.
  • Hygiene care: Support with hygiene while in bed, or assess the feasibility of using a mobile shower commode.
  • Pressure relief: Ensure regular repositioning and assess the need for, and most suitable type of, pressure-relieving mattress.
  • Entertainment and engagement: Facilitate access to entertainment options (e.g. tablet, phone, laptop, television), including device charging and screen positioning suitable for a lying posture.
  • Home and personal safety: Enable secure access to the home (e.g. key safes or smart locks) to avoid leaving doors unlocked.
  • Routine planning: Collaborate on a practical plan to manage work, family, or caregiving responsibilities during the bed rest period.
  • Wound monitoring: Provide regular updates on wound progress. Visible improvement can be a strong motivator to maintain bed rest.
  • Psychological support: Ensure access to emotional or psychological support services.
